Everyone’s favourite creamy and dreamy Indian restaurant classic – mango lassi. What better way to combine the sweetness of mangoes with the tanginess of yoghurt? This sweet and rich mango lassi is made with fresh honey mangoes, whole milk and, sugar for a refreshing summer drink.
Mango Lassi

Mango lassi, a delightful concoction originating from the Indian subcontinent, is a creamy and refreshing yogurt-based drink infused with the tropical sweetness of mangoes.

This classic beverage is not only simple to make but also bursts with flavor, making it a perfect treat for any occasion.

Crafting a mango lassi is akin to capturing the essence of a sunny day in a glass. Its origins trace back to the rich culinary traditions of South Asia, where mangoes reign supreme as the “king of fruits.”

This recipe gracefully marries the creamy texture of yogurt with the luscious sweetness of ripe mangoes, resulting in a harmonious blend of flavors that dance on your palate.

Despite its exotic origins, preparing mango lassi is surprisingly easy, even for novice home cooks. With just a handful of ingredients and a blender, you can whip up this delectable drink in a matter of minutes.

Whether you’re craving a cool refreshment on a hot summer day or seeking a flavorful accompaniment to your favorite spicy curry, mango lassi is sure to satisfy your taste buds.

Expert Tip: For an extra indulgent treat, top your mango lassi with a dollop of whipped cream or a sprinkle of ground cardamom before serving. It adds a luxurious touch to this already delightful drink.

Ingredients

Mangoes: Ripe mangoes provide a burst of tropical sweetness and vibrant color. Mangoes are not only delicious but also rich in vitamins and antioxidants, adding a nutritious boost to your mango lassi.

Sugar: A touch of sweetness from sugar enhances the natural flavor of mangoes, creating a perfectly balanced sweetness in the lassi. Adjust the amount of sugar based on the ripeness of your mangoes and your personal preference.

Yoghurt: Creamy yogurt forms the base of mango lassi, imparting a smooth and luscious texture. Yoghurt adds a tangy note to the drink while also providing probiotics, promoting gut health and digestion.

Milk: Milk adds creaminess to the lassi and helps achieve the desired consistency. Whole milk is preferred for its richness, but you can opt for semi-skimmed milk for a lighter alternative without compromising on taste.

Ice Cubes: Ice cubes are essential for achieving the perfect chill in your mango lassi, making it incredibly refreshing. They also help to thicken the drink slightly, resulting in a smooth and creamy texture that’s utterly indulgent.

Expert Tip: Use ripe mangoes for the best flavor. Look for mangoes that yield slightly to gentle pressure and have a sweet aroma at the stem end.

Serving Suggestions

  • Pair your mango lassi with a spicy curry for a delightful contrast of flavors. The creamy sweetness of the lassi helps to balance out the heat from the curry, creating a harmonious dining experience.
  • Serve mango lassi as a refreshing drink alongside your favorite Indian dishes, such as biryani, tandoori chicken, or samosas. Its cooling properties make it the perfect complement to spicy and flavorful cuisine.
  • Enjoy mango lassi as a standalone treat on a hot summer day. Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint or a slice of mango for an extra touch of elegance.
  • For a fun twist, turn mango lassi into popsicles by pouring the mixture into popsicle molds and freezing until solid. These homemade popsicles are a deliciously cool treat for kids and adults alike.
  • Host a mango lassi party and set up a DIY lassi bar with various toppings and mix-ins such as chopped nuts, coconut flakes, or a drizzle of honey. Let your guests customize their lassi creations for a fun and interactive experience.

Expert Tip: Adjust the sweetness of the lassi according to your preference. If the mangoes are very sweet, you may need less sugar, whereas if they are tart, you may want to add a bit more.
