Homemade tomato sauce recipe isn’t only great on pizza but can be used in pasta or even served alongside meat or fish!

Traditional Italian tomato sauce uses San Marzona tomatoes to give it that authentic taste, but with this home pizza sauce recipe, you can get that authentic pizza taste without having to scour the supermarkets for those rare tomatoes.

I have a pizza dough recipe, so I thought it would be good to share my pizza sauce recipe. This is a classic pizza sauce. It’s essentially a basic tomato sauce recipe. This makes enough sauce for two 12-inch pizzas depending on how saucy you like your pizzas.

Making a homemade pizza sauce from scratch will transform your pizzas. There is a great amount of debate as to whether pizza sauce should be cooked or not.

I know some people say that pizza sauce should not be cooked at all, and some say that you should let the pizza sauce cook for hours. It kind of is up to personal preference.

This homemade pizza sauce freezes well so it can be made ahead of time. It keeps well for a month or so you can always make extra and freeze some for later use if required.

The recipe for this homemade tomato sauce for pizza tastes delicious and really adds a lot of flavour to the pizzas you make.

Pizza sauce is best made with San Marzano tomatoes in this recipe. I don’t always use them and this pizza sauce still tastes delicious. Check these ones out if you want to try San Marzano tomatoes.

However, if you want to try out some others then be sure to check that they are canned and whole.

If the tomatoes are not canned or not whole, then they are not authentic San Marzano tomatoes. Unless you live in Italy, that is. Anywhere else in the world, the San Marzano tomatoes will only ever be whole (or in half) and they will always come canned.

They will never be diced or chopped, so keep this in mind when looking for San Marzano tomatoes. San Marzano tomatoes can be grown in other places, but the ones I am talking about are from Italy.

If you can’t find San Marzano tomatoes (or you simply don’t want to) then always use fresh tomatoes. Fresh tomatoes are always much better than canned. They make the sauce taste so much better and add more flavour. Some tomato varieties that I like to use include plum tomatoes and Roma tomatoes.
